An Obama executive order on 6/15/2012 nullified that decision, by refusing to enforce deportation. He also pandered to Hispanics prior to the election by giving temporory amnesty to at least 1 million illegals. It gave even more migrants the green light to come here, but a stagnant economy had the opposite effect.
Rep President Reagan gave the first amnesty in 1986, to 2.8 million illegal immigrants who had resided here continuously prior to January 1, 1982. That caused even more illegals to come to the US, thinking another amnesty would eventually be granted. The Simpson Mazzoli Act responded by requiring employers to verify their employee’s immigration status, and made it a crime to knowingly hire illegals, but enforcement was later relaxed due to pressure from left wing anti-discrimination groups. We can’t afford another amnesty. A Heritage Group study shows it would cost $6 trillion to implement, $36 billion more per year in social services than immigrants pay in taxes, and it will reduce the current rate of illegal immigration by only 25%. Claims that the “Gang of 8” bill won’t cost a cent, or that E-verify will flush illegals out of the shadows and turn them into taxpayers are naïve exaggerations. Besides, Obama wants the border open to Mexicans, of whom 2/3 are big government liberals, to make sure Democrats have a majority for at least the next 20 years. |
It would cost as little as $14 billion per year to secure the border, and enforcing existing immigration laws would stop 90% of illegals, but only 60 miles of the border fence promised in 2006 ever got built. Neither do businesses want to lose cheap labor and Obamacare isn’t manditory for immigrants.
Taxpayers will provide free health-care for illegals, in spite of propaganda stating the opposite. Federal laws that exclude healthcare for non-citizens without means to pay, will not be enforced anymore than deportation laws. Thus hospitals will be crowded with illegals, US citizens will wait in lines behind them, and their expenses will be paid in higher taxes and more debt. Work-subsidy (WS) a solution: There’s something wrong with our political leadership when 7 million US citizens collect unemployment, while 7 million illegals receive a paycheck. We should help illegals return home, now that the Mexican economy is rebounding, and we need to make the jobs they leave more appealing to Americans. Paying US citizens an incentive to do their work is more humane than harassing employers of illegals with fines. Everybody wins if we pay subsidies to unemployed Americans, for taking jobs illegals typically seek. A work-subsidy (WS) program would give US citizens an opportunity to earn a |
competitive wage for doing agricultural, manufacturing, construction, and domestic work, rather than collecting employment compensation and letting produce rot in the field.
Corporations and foreign governments often pay subsidies to undercut competitors in new markets. Competion would give illegals an incentive to self-deport. That would save taxpayers billions in social services, plus ease overcrowding in hospitals and jails. State WS plans could work without the border fence. States with large populations of illegals should examine their options and create a pilot program. Political leaders can do a better job of managing our economy. Their priority should be helping Americans get back to work, not pandering for votes with more socialism. Work subsidies might work and they are certainly worth a try.
